A Catholic girl from Jordan was interviewed on the Today show yesterday about 
a book she wrote about "Honour Killings" after her muslim girl friend was 
stabbed to death by her father (stabbed twelve times in the chest) because 
she wanted to marry a Catholic boy.  The father rang the authorities after 
he was sure she was dead.  Under two articles in Jordanian law this form of 
'execution' is legal.

more of this culture required here immediately. i feel deprived that i now
know about this facet of jordanian culture but have not seen it ....

Fact 2. No Arab would call his dog Big Joe
Fact 3. Big Joe is actually a love-lorn negro sergeant from Texas. He is a
member of the 101 Airborne Division at the Amman base.
Fact 4. Big Joe cannot write.
Fact 5. There has been a mis-translation from Jordanian to English. The dog was
actually wearing a condom which is euphemistically called a love letter in
conservative Jordan.
Fact 6. He was actually on a mission to the girl's brother.

This is yet another instance of collateral damage in the Middle East
conflict. Innocent dogs and other people are, as always, the main victims

I forget to tell you - the brother was trying to break off his relationship 
with the dog, who was acting as the proxy in this affair. 
When the dog refused, the brother killed it.
